Phone Photography Contest 96 | Prayers

It's been a couple of weeks since a series of changes began here, and while it might be too soon to debate whether things have improved or not, I've particularly liked the direction the political landscape has taken. I think I'm not the only one who's been surprised by what's happened here, and I mean people on both sides; I think many of us still keep the country first in our prayers, which reminds me of my trip to the Vatican a few months ago... Not all my brothers and sisters in music are believers like me, but for me it was a very significant experience, and I remember that Venezuela was first in my prayers, especially on the day of the canonization of our first two saints. I was sure that after so many years something good had to come for us.

Han pasado un par de semanas desde que iniciaron una serie de cambios por acá, y aunque puede ser muy pronto para debatir entre si han mejorado las cosas o no, particularmente me ha gustado el rumbo que ha tomado el panorama político. Creo que no soy el único que se ha sorprendido con las cosas que han ocurrido aquí, y me refiero a personas de ambos bandos; creo que muchos seguimos teniendo al país de primero en nuestras oraciones, lo que me lleva a recordar mi viaje al Vaticano de hace unos meses... No todos mis hermanos en la música son creyentes como yo, pero para mí fue algo muy grande y recuerdo que Venezuela fue lo primero en mis oraciones, especialmente aquel día de la canonización de nuestros primeros dos santos. Yo estaba seguro que después de tantos años algo bueno tenía que llegar para nosotros.

These were the first photographs I took upon returning to Venezuela. I was visiting this Catholic church, and there was so much joy and so many people filled with the emotion of celebrating our saints. I took hundreds of photos of this beautiful place, full of color and so many details in every corner. Although we were joyful, there was always a latent threat, but we've been trying to be happy for over two decades now, even though everything in the country is in chaos. This year began with violence in the capital city, and yet, weeks have passed, and although no one is celebrating, no one is complaining about the positive changes either. In fact, inflation has magically begun to correct itself, and that's saying something. It's impossible for me not to think that all our prayers of so many years have finally been heard, and I say this as someone who, through music, has been present at sacred events for both sides of the political spectrum in my country. Those we consider evil also prayed, but we can't forget that many people on that side are forced to do so, just as I myself was forced to sing the national anthem in their favor.

Estas fotografías fueron las primeras que tomé al volver a Venezuela. Estaba conociendo este templo católico y había mucha alegría y muchas personas con la emoción de la celebración de nuestros santos. Tomé centenares de fotos de este hermoso lugar, lleno de colores y muchos detalles en cada rincón. Aunque estábamos alegres siempre hubo una amenaza latente, pero igual ya tenemos más de dos décadas tratando de ser felices aunque todo en el país es un caos... Este año lo comenzamos con violencia en la ciudad capital, y aún así, han pasado las semanas y aunque nadie celebra, tampoco nadie se queja de los cambios a favor, de hecho la inflación mágicamente ha comenzado a corregirse, y eso es mucho decir. Es inevitable para mí pensar que todas nuestras oraciones de tantos años finalmente han sido escuchadas, y lo digo yo que por medio de la música he estado en eventos sacros de ambas partes de los bandos políticos de mi país. Quienes consideramos malos también oraban, pero no podemos olvidar que de eso lado muchas personas están obligadas a hacerlo, así como yo mismo estuve obligado a cantar el himno nacional a favor de ellos.

Perhaps many people will find what I write here foolish, but I have great faith and I can't help but believe in God, even though God has a different face in every region of the world. I believe in collective energy; many of us have focused our prayers on a single goal, and although there is still a long way to go, we all feel that justice has been served in some way. It's sad that it ended in violence, but even I, as a normal teenager going to school in the early 2000s, knew this was how it would end. We're not really surprised by what happened at the beginning of the month, but we are surprised by how quickly and strangely the changes have been occurring. For my part, I believe it's time to continue praying and continue building our country through our hard work. It's impossible not to think that the celebrations in all our Catholic churches last October and everyone's prayers played a part in things improving; that's how I feel... Today I'm happily sharing these photos I took with my phone of a place that gave me peace and security, and I'm using them as my entry for Phone Photography Contest #96. I hope you like them 🙏

Quizás a muchas personas les parezca tonto lo que escribo aquí, pero tengo mucha fe y no puedo evitar creer en Dios, aunque en cada región del mundo Dios tenga un rostro distinto. Creo en la energía colectiva, hemos sido muchas personas enfocando nuestras plegarias en una sola meta, y aunque hay camino por recorrer, todos sentimos que se ha hecho justicia de alguna manera. Es triste que haya terminado en violencia, pero hasta yo siendo un adolescente normal yendo a la escuela a inicios de los 2000 supe que esto iba a terminar de esta manera, de verdad que no nos sorprende lo sucedido a inicios de mes, pero sí lo rápido y lo extraño que se han estado dando los cambios. Por mi parte, creo que es el momento de seguir orando y seguir construyendo país con nuestro arduo trabajo. Es inevitable pensar que estas celebraciones en todas nuestras iglesias católicas el pasado mes de Octubre y las plegarias de todos no hayan tenido que ver para que las cosas mejoren, así lo siento yo... Hoy comparto con mucha alegría estas fotos que tomé con mi teléfono de un lugar que me trasmitió paz y seguridad, y lo convierto en mi entrada para el Phone Photography Contest #96, espero que les agrade 🙏
