Superstition is everywhere.
I have never thought of anything about digital superstition until I came across this post, and I smiled knowing that it's something I had experienced, believed in, participated in, and now laugh over the belief. Nigeria is so funny that superstition is taken very seriously, even to the extent that people you never thought would believe such things, because of their level of literacy, are still doing it. I still have my pastors who are literate, forwarding messages containing superstition to me.

Exactly in the month of March 2025, I received a message from my girlfriend. It was a wishful message saying that if I believed in the wish, something good would happen to me, but I needed to forward it to ten dear friends. When I saw it, I laughed and, in my mind, mocked my girl for coming so low as to participate in forwarding such a message to ten dear friends. But even while I was mocking her shabby belief, something came to my mind and asked: What if God is truly going to use this method to bless me? What if her act is not mere superstition? That's when I made up my mind to forward the message to ten friends because I didn't want to miss out. But a funny thing happened in the process: when I had clicked forward, I couldn't find a suitable person to send the message to, because if I forwarded it to my friends, they'd all end up laughing at me. So I stopped and never forwarded the message to anybody. I just believed that if God wants to visit me with something good, He should do it without forcing me to compulsorily forward the message to anybody.
That's exactly how the superstition belief works for people who believe or once believed. I'm no longer a believer in those things, but because I once believed, I was almost lured into thinking that what my girl sent to me was true and could work, and not just based on superstition.

This experience is one of the many I have had. The funniest ones are the messages that instruct people to forward them to a certain number of persons if they don't want to experience bad luck or die the next day. The manner in which these kinds of messages are being forwarded makes one afraid of not falling for the trick—because no one wants to die or experience bad luck.
Thank You!
