Visiting the Comic Expo on the first day

Last weekend I dedicated myself entirely to Comic Expo, and in this post I bring you the first part. It was an intense two days for lovers of geek culture, comics, anime, manga, cosplay, and even K-pop. Although in this first post I'll focus on the participating booths and businesses.

Saturday arrived around noon. I had an early lunch at home and left to spend the whole day at the Expo. When I arrived, it was packed. The attendance that first day was massive. Just as the organizers had said at the press conference, the VIP tickets were sold out; only general admission tickets remained for those who wanted to attend and buy them there.

At the entrance, there was an access control point, and those who bought a ticket were given a wristband. They could enter and exit as many times as they wanted, in case they felt like strolling around the mall. What was prohibited was bringing in food, since the idea was for the brands that sold food inside to have sales.

El fin de semana pasado me dediqué por completo a la Comic Expo, y en esta publicación les traigo la primera parte. Fueron dos días intensos para los amantes de la cultura geek, los cómics, el anime, el manga, el cosplay e incluso el K-pop. Aunque en esta primera publicación me centraré en los stands y negocios participantes.

El sábado llegó alrededor del mediodía. Almorcé temprano en casa y salí para pasar todo el día en la Expo. Cuando llegué, todo estaba abarrotado. La asistencia ese primer día fue masiva. Tal como habían dicho los organizadores en la rueda de prensa, las entradas VIP se agotaron; solo quedaban entradas de admisión general para quienes quisieran asistir y comprarlas allí.

En la entrada, había un control de acceso y a quienes compraron una entrada se les entregó una pulsera. Podían entrar y salir tantas veces como quisieran, por si les apetecía pasear por el centro comercial. Lo que estaba prohibido era introducir comida, ya que la idea era que las marcas que vendían comida dentro tuvieran ventas.

The first thing I did on the first day was visit all the stalls. There was everything imaginable; it made you want to bring a ton of money to buy it all. T-shirts with fluorescent prints are always present at these kinds of events. They really stand out.

The stalls selling anime and comic book figures were a must-see, as were the ones selling posters. I asked several people how sales were going, and they all seemed happy. Of course, they had some products at affordable prices; those were the best sellers.

There were also illustrators' stalls. I spoke with one called Wilustrator, who has published comics, all drawn by him, with characters he created. There was one about an indigenous superhero with his avatars. The design looked very professional. They were also selling fan-made comics, where well-known characters had adventures in the country, with dialogue that reflected Venezuelan idiosyncrasies.

The food stalls were also packed. There were quite a few Venezuelans there. Most of the tables were on the outdoor terrace, where many people could sit and enjoy the pleasant weather. The first day the sky was somewhat cloudy, so it wasn't very sunny, which created a nice atmosphere.

Lo primero que hice el primer día fue visitar todos los puestos. Había de todo; daban ganas de llevar un montón de dinero para comprarlo todo. Las camisetas con estampados fluorescentes siempre están presentes en este tipo de eventos. Llaman mucho la atención.

Los puestos que vendían figuras de anime y cómics eran imprescindibles, al igual que los que vendían pósteres. Pregunté a varias personas cómo iban las ventas y todas estaban contentas. Por supuesto, tenían algunos productos a precios asequibles; esos eran los que más se vendían.

También había puestos de ilustradores. Hablé con uno llamado Wilustrator, que ha publicado cómics, todos dibujados por él, con personajes creados por él. Había uno de un superhéroe indígena con sus avatares. El diseño se veía muy profesional. También vendían cómics hechos por fans, donde personajes conocidos vivían aventuras en el país, con diálogos que reflejaban las peculiaridades venezolanas.

Los puestos de comida también estaban abarrotados. Había bastantes venezolanos. La mayoría estaban ubicados en la terraza al aire libre, donde mucha gente podía sentarse y disfrutar del buen tiempo. El primer día el cielo estuvo algo nublado, por lo que no hacía mucho sol, lo que creó un ambiente agradable.

I lingered for a while at one of my favorite booths, Luis Jiménez's, the country's biggest Batman collector. He had many items from his collection on display. The Batmobile, which arrived last year and was also featured at the previous edition, was the main attraction. It's fascinating to stay and enjoy all the products, both old and new, that he has collected over the years.

He teamed up with a renowned chef from the city, who created a meter-long Batmobile made entirely of chocolate. This attracted a lot of attention, and people were taking pictures with the Batmobile.

They didn't want to eat it on the last day; they preferred to save it for a special event another day. So, when the Expo ended, the chef took the chocolate Batmobile to his restaurant, where he would give it a few more finishing touches. I hope they invite me when they decide to cut it open and try the chocolate.

You might be wondering, "Where are the cosplayers?" I took so many photos that I'll save them for a future post, where I'll talk about other attractions at the Expo.

Me quedé un rato en uno de mis stands favoritos, el de Luis Jiménez, el mayor coleccionista de Batman del país. Tenía muchos artículos de su colección en exhibición. El Batimóvil, que llegó el año pasado y también se presentó en la edición anterior, era la atracción principal. Es fascinante quedarse y disfrutar de todos los productos, tanto antiguos como nuevos, que ha ido coleccionando a lo largo de los años.

Se asoció con un reconocido chef de la ciudad, quien creó un Batimóvil de un metro de largo completamente de chocolate. Esto atrajo mucha atención, y la gente se tomaba fotos con el Batimóvil.

No quisieron comérselo el último día; prefirieron guardarlo para una actividad especial otro día. Así que, cuando terminó la Expo, el chef llevó el Batimóvil de chocolate al restaurante, donde le daría algunos retoques más. Espero que me inviten cuando decidan cortarlo y probar el chocolate.

Quizás se pregunten: "¿Dónde están los cosplayers?" Tomé tantas fotos que las guardaré para una publicación futura, donde hablaré sobre otras atracciones que había en la Expo.
