Two Faces of the City

This photo seems to tell the story of a city with two faces: luxury and slums, or progress and backwardness, or rich people in ties and poor people struggling to find food to eat. As I submitted in the 145th round of the contest, I can clearly see the opulence of tall buildings that robs the rights of those on the fringes, forcing them to marginalize themselves and build homes with whatever materials are available and live in slums. That's the true nature of the city. Many of the opulence of buildings stems from the audacity to seize the land of the poor who have not received legal justice.

This photo was taken using a cellphone camera when I visited Jakarta to visit my sister-in-law for a pre-wedding photo shoot.
