Splinterlands Art Contest Week 363-Baby Unicorn

Welcome to my blog.

Hello, I hope you're having a nice day. Today I want to share with you a new illustration, my version of Baby Unicorn, inspired by the original Splinterlands card, but reinterpreted by me. This illustration is my entry for the @splinterlands art contest.

The story goes that in recent years there's been a huge increase in unicorn births, which has put the Khymians on alert. Baby unicorns are friendlier than the adults; the latter already possess magical powers, but don't yet understand their sacred nature. The problem is that they're very curious and tend to wander wherever they want. The thing is, they can get into trouble, and if one of those little ones were to die (this applies to adults), terrible things could happen. With those little ones on the streets of the Shining City, the Khymians are very nervous.

The Baby Unicorn card caught my attention because of its cuteness and its support role in combat. But beyond its stats, what I loved was its tender design. It's a small unicorn, with magical power that made it seem more than just an adorable creature. In my version, I wanted to preserve that essence of innocence and power, but take it to a more natural, more anime-like, more my own realm.

I chose a warm and soft palette for the unicorn's body, a creamy tone that conveys innocence and tenderness. I didn't want it to be completely white because I was looking for a more skin-like, more vibrant texture. Turquoise tones are used in the hair and tail, with shadows and highlights that give it depth. These colors not only match the body, but also represent the magical power that flows through these adorable creatures, as if each hair holds power.

The eyes are large, in shades of sky blue, with internal reflections that convey curiosity and joy. For me, the eyes and hair are key in any creature or human; they're what captivates the viewer when they see it, or at least that's what captivates me.

The horn is another fundamental element. I made it in shades of purple, with a gradient that goes from the darkest base to the brightest tip. It also adds a slight magical glow that makes it look active, as if it contains a lot of power. It's not just decorative; it's a symbol of its magical power.

The background was created with a natural and cheerful approach. The unicorn is in a green field, surrounded by leafy trees and under a blue sky with clouds. This setting not only matches the character, but also shows how it interacts with the environment, nature, and magic. The white flowers scattered in the grass are small details that add tenderness and balance.

I wanted the background to have depth, with layers of vegetation and its respective sky. This helps the unicorn feel integrated into the world.

Comparison with the original Baby Unicorn. The original Splinterlands card has a more cartoonish style, with simple lines and an aesthetic designed to be functional within the game. My version seeks to go beyond functionality and into the narrative. I've kept key elements like the magical horn, the blue mane, and the friendly expression, but adapted them to a more detailed anime style, with an emphasis on anatomy, color, and emotion.

While the original is presented as a friendly creature, my Baby Unicorn has a more adorable and curious presence, as if it wants to investigate everything around it. Its posture is firm, its gaze observant, and the environment accompanies it with much to explore.

For me, reinterpreting characters and creatures is a way to pay homage, but also to build something new, something more in my style. Baby Unicorn was a card I loved because of its design, and like all the other cards, I always wanted to give it my anime style.

I hope this version conveys the joy and magic that these beautiful creatures represent. We invite you to reinterpret your favorite Splinterlands character. See you soon.
