Splinterlands Art Contest Week 358-Gargoye Devi

Welcome to my blog.

Hello friends, I hope you're all well. Today I want to share an illustration based on one of the cards from the Splinterlands game to participate in the weekly @splinterlands contest. This time, I created the Gargoye Devil.

The story tells us how these stone creatures, known as gargoyles, are the result of a battle that took place on the other side of the world against the Chaos Legion. It turns out that many years ago, a stone tower existed far from the Splinterlands, taller than all its structures. It was known as the ancient tower of a conquered lord; it was empty and protected by the gargoyles that adorned it. When the Chaos Legion appeared at the tower through the stellar rift, large, bright meteorites fell, destroying the tower. But surprisingly, these gargoyles were unharmed and turned out to be alive. After what happened, they left as if they were a tribe across the sea in search of a new place to live, while their world was increasingly torn apart.

The original illustration of Gargoyle Devil features an imposing creature with bat-like wings, sharp horns, and a menacing stance. The purple and blue colors give it a dark and mysterious air. The lighting adds a touch of refinement that I like, and the glowing red eyes are the point that conveys aggression.

What caught my attention most was its posture and the way it plays with shadows to highlight its muscles. However, I felt I could improve it even further, give it more drama, and add a background with an environment that would reinforce its hellish nature.

In my version, I decided to add a background. Instead of having no background, I chose to depict the character in a place filled with flames. With this, I wanted anyone viewing it to feel the heat, fury, and energy emanating from this creature.

The pose in my illustration: the torso leaning forward, fists clenched, muscles tensed. I feel this posture conveys action, as if it were about to launch into combat. The result is a more physical and lively figure.

The face is one of the things I changed the most. Instead of a restrained expression, I gave him a furious look, with eyes blazing like fire and an open mouth showing fangs. The jaw is more pronounced, which enhances his character.

I also added a more visible tail, which complements and suggests that it can be used as a weapon. I rendered the wings with more color, with a deep red that stands out against the background.

The colors were important to the execution. I used intense reds, oranges, and dark colors for the deep shadows to create a hellish background. The flaming background not only highlights the character, but also supports what I want to convey; he seems to emerge from the fire, like a creature born from chaos.

These colors are very different from the original. While that one uses cool tones and a neutral background, mine uses both dark and intense colors. My intention was for you to feel a difference between the two. While the original is more mysterious, my illustration is full of fury and chaos.

My illustration, as always, is anime-style, with clean lines, clear expressions, and varied colors. But I also added bolder shadows and more dramatic lighting to give the gargoyle more prominence.

It was fun to be able to compare the two versions. It's not about copying, but rather adapting them to your style. I started from a very solid base and created my own version from it. I hope you like it and are encouraged to create your own version of any card in the Splinterlands game.
