One Done, Lots More to Go - May 19, 2025 @goldenoakfarm
On Monday morning I managed to get the 50 photos edited but no post up. I got the laundry started and headed out at 9AM to finish the New South garden. It was in the 50’s and there was a bit of wind but I was determined.
In the 2 days and lots of rain between days working in this garden, the weeds had grown a LOT. It took me nearly 2 hours to clean out this half of the garden. Mind you, it had been thoroughly done in early March.
I went to the cold frame and selected plants to plant:
1 good size pot of blue violas with faces
2 balsam
1 cosmos
2 zinnias
1 columbine
1 snapdragon
2 yellow pansies with faces
I got them planted, got my photos, took my notes and cleaned up the mess. It was 11:15AM when I got inside.
I had to get a shower and some lunch before the Senior van picked me up at 12:30PM for this event.
It was pretty interesting. She must have done 15 costume changes in the 1 hour presentation. We had a large crowd of 60 turn out for it.
When I got home, I was really exhausted. I just kept the laundry going and lay on the couch watching a movie. Later in the afternoon, I finally got my post up.
On Tuesday my helper friend is coming and I’m hoping we can get the whole tomato/pepper area finished, except for planting. It’s turned really cold here and is expected to stay that way through Tuesday. Unfortunately it’s supposed to rain on Thursday, the day my helper friend and I really try to get things done outside. So there will be a big push on Tuesday.
The Iris Garden looks so nice, Pam. Those darn weeds pop of different ones every few weeks, don't they?
Hope you don't get the cold wind and rain that we just had. My peppers were a bit made at me, yikes! We hit 43° this morning, chilly for sure.
Yes, we are getting it now, until next Tuesday. Nobody who hates it below 50F has gone out yet. Just too cold and windy! I only have 1 door open partway on the cold frames, just too cold.
How about the days that your helper friend does not come around?
It’s usually too stressful, right?
I just plan differently what I will, or will not get done. I have the interns sometimes in those places.
2 days of steady rain sure make the green grow!
No kidding!

The rain is surely going to help your plants grow
What season do you love most for your plants?
Rainy or sunny?
Ideally, I'd like it to rain some each night, then be sunny and temperate during the day, Upper 60's or so. Some of the plants wouldn't like that so much like tomatoes, peppers, squash. Others like greens or brassicas would love it.
