The well-used knob

vcpo90133.jpg

Do you have a well-used knob?

Has your knob been well-used by yourself or someone else?

Have you used someone else's knob well?

Feel free to comment below in answer to these knob-related questions if you'd like to.

See those two knobs in the image above, they're in my truck and they've been well used...by me.

The one at the top left of image moves my four wheel drive from high-range four wheel drive (H4) to low range four wheel drive (L4) and it's when in L4 the fun starts.

My truck is full-time 4WD meaning it drives all four wheels all the time in high-range gearing; and when L4 is selected it drives all four wheels in low-range gearing - it's the latter I use when doing serious off-road driving like a few weeks ago as mentioned in this post. It's great fun.

The knob below to the centre of the image is the "terrain select" knob which has different grip-assist settings for various terrain conditions like rock-crawling, sand, loose gravel and shale, snow, mud and so on. Play with the knob and the vehicle will provide some magical assistance to help the driver maintain control of the vehicle in various terrain conditions. This doesn't mean it self-drives and there's no need for the driver to have skills, it just means the systems in the car help augment the driver's skills by changing various settings.

I use these two knobs well.

What I mean there is that I use them often because I'm off-road four wheel driving a lot and that means I'm in low-range gears with the traction control off (the traction is automatically disabled when in L4) in various off-road driving situations...and I love it!

Oh, you might see a button to the right of the image immediately to the right of the terrain select knob...that's the differential lock which is used in many off-road situations but I don't have the headspace to explain what it does right now. Let's just say it adds additional "magic" and makes the vehicle even more capable in specific off-road situations like climbing steep and rutted inclines and so on where one wheel lifts off the ground - sometimes two opposing wheels lift - maybe I'll do a post on diff locks someday. One of my older 4x4's ⬇️

When I started off roading all those years ago my 4x4's never had such technology. I had to engage the hubs (lock in) manually, select low-range with a second gear stick and there was no terrain select knobs...just my eyes, judgement, hands to steer and feet to use pedals. It was a lot more fun but also a lot more risk as user-error was more possible.

Anyway, I've been planning some short trips lately, for when I'm not as busy with work, and hope to play with those knobs a lot more leading into the end of year.

I never heard the word knob before... I don't have a car with that functions so I'm totally clueless 😂 I guess since I've never done off road and driven a beast like yours... Are those easy to use?

The only knob I use is the music volume and fan speed, that's it 😄

Driving off road (four wheel driving) takes skill and understanding and is not something a person should be doing without...it's too risky.

I’ve always believed the tools we often use become extensions of ourselves. In your writing I've experienced the subtle blend of nostalgia and modern thrill perfectly. I think it’s not just about the knobs rather it’s about the freedom, the true grit, and the joy of exploring terrain that most people only dream of.

I fear your knobs joke is wasted on these philistines😄 We used to have a door furniture shop in Dublin called Knobs and Knockers that, as kids, we thought highly amusing.

I know right? I thought it was quite a clever play on the word but, alas, seems not at all.

Knobs, the lot of them.

Knobs and Knockers, well worthy of a laugh.

Knobs and Knockers would be right in line with some of the biker bars around here lol...or up in Alaska across from Skinny Dick's Halfway Inn.

Sounds like you really know how to make the most of those knobs! 🚙 Off-roading with all that tech must be an amazing mix of skill and fun.

I have heard the word knob before, but I have never driven a car with a knob facility. In fact, there are only a limited number of cars and cabs with such facilities in our country. However, even though I saw a friend of mine who is living abroad in Germany posting his car with a knob on his Instagram account, I still drive the manual and auto gear that I rent.

I had my knob polished yesterday after the beach. Does that count?

Well yeah I mean proof is always a good thing but maybe on this occasion we should forego it.

My wife's new car has a button and she doesn't think it really makes that much of a difference. It isn't 4WD or anything, I think it just changes the shift points for different scenarios. I'm actually surprised she doesn't appreciate the button more since she is adept at driving a manual transmission and I am not.

Transmission, suspension or engine tuning buttons are fun...all three are funner.

Well, I don't have an answer for those first three questions, but it did bring to mind the fact that Halloween will be coming up in a couple months. You know, the one where the ghouls and knob gobblers hobb goblins come out to play.

I do have a well-used knob, but I can't remember what happens when you turn it, as it has been so well-used that the writing has been rubbed off and now I'm half afraid to give it a twirl..first world problem I suppose😏

Lolled at "knob gobblers!"

At least you got the reference, it seems only you and dierdy did.

I'm happily divorced from cars, so no more playing with those knobs for the time being. I sometimes go on a date with my brother's car, but it has very few knobs, and most of them do not lead to much pleasure. Even the radio is broken.

Whenever I feel the urge to fumble some knobs, I go to the kitchen and harass the knobs on my machines. And boy, do they give me some pleasure! And it's mutual, they get really hot. One of them goes from 0 to 1000°C in no time. But I have to be careful, if I don't grope two knobs at the same time, she can explode.

IMG_20250810_204405.jpg

The other, much used one, is a real money maker. She gets handed around between my kitchen and the restaurant, where the girls give her some good action, too. Sometimes, when she gets too hot, she starts to smell funny though. Then we have to let her get some rest before exploiting her further.

I bet you give those knobs a lot of use and somewhat of a punishing.

Of course, and they love it. Being used is their raison d'être, and I happily comply. And a well meant punishment from time to time keeps them on edge.

Did I read a comment where someone said their brothers knob was broken?

Big pHarma has a pill for that...

Knob Gobblers 🤣😂🤣

Those shots are lovely.

I have a knob in my car that makes it go into all wheel drive mode. It's useful sometimes when the roads feel particularly wet/slippery/flooded or when it's an unsealed road/track but I wouldn't take it off-roading.

it would be perfectly fine as long as the track wasn't too hairy/actually needed proper 4wd, it's me I'm the problem and not confident

I remember the second/tiny gearstick when I was a kid and we would regularly go off-roading to get to the more interesting places/picnic spots in my dad's ute. I even remember him trying to explain it to me when i asked him what it was for back then and I still didn't get it XD

Back in the day those second gear sticks were how it was engaged into 4x4 and one even had to get out of the vehicle and "lock in" the hubs. None of that now though, all buttons and electronics. I miss the old days.

Ahh I remember Dad doing that too, he just described it as he had to "lock the wheel". I think there's a button for the wheel lock now but his gearbox isn't as techy looking as yours.

He still likes his jungle hikes but I don't think he misses doing all the manual stuff with the cars much as he is pushing 70.

Yeah, some have buttons, mine is a knob, the one above the terrain selection one in the image.

I think I'll be the same as your dad as I get older, four wheel driving takes effort, not so much driving, but when one gets bogged it's a lot of work to extricate oneself and that's not an old man's game. (Not that I'm old yet, but you know what I mean.)
