Enjoying a Couple of Weiss Beers with Some Freshly Baked Sourdough for #BeerSaturday

Every now and then I treat myself with some freshly baked sourdough bread. There is nothing that comes close to this type of bread, in my opinion. When you bake the bread, the kitchen smells of pure sourdough bread, a unique smell that I just love.

I had a couple of cold Weiss beers in the fridge, so I thought, why not crack them open and have a slice of still warm bread?

And who would have doubted that this would be a match made in heaven? The fresh bread soaked up the butter and the jams, the beers complimented the bread, and it was just a good combination in all of the senses.

So, please join me on this beer tasting adventure, with some freshly baked bread, and a sensory overload!

The Oryx Weiss

Weiss | 4.5% ABV | 12 IBUs

As I opened this beer, it had that classic weiss smell, yeasty and bready; but this could have been the freshly baked bread in the kitchen as well! Secondly came the nice fruity esters and banana smell. Perfect!

The first taste confirms this, yeasty and banana ester fruity explosion of flavour. But sadly, the beer was not full bodied at all, and a bit watery. The taste did not last long as I sipped on the beer, quick to fade just like the head which also did not last long. It was also very carbonated.

All in all, it was a good beer, with some flaws, but who would be sad with freshly baked bread and some cold beers?

Pixie Dust Weissbeer

Weiss | 4.7% ABV | 14 IBUs

Again, as I opened the beer, I was met with that classic weiss smell, not as prominent as the other one, but same esters and fruity banana smell. I really enjoy Darling Brew's beers, but sometimes they can be a hit or a miss.

The taste was much more full bodied, and not as watery as the previous beer. It also had much more fruity notes. The head was also more lasting and less carbonated than other beer. This resulted in a much smoother texture, especially regarding bubble size.

Overall, this was a good beer from Darling brew! It also had its flaws, but again, who can complain with beer and bread?

Postscriptum, or Cheers!

While the world is going crazy in its own unique ways, and while we can sit around the table an complain about everything, we can also come together over some beer and bread, to just remind ourselves of how special life actually is.

With each sip and each bite of bread, I was again reminded of how special life is. We can always strive for more and better, and some people kill themselves to reach those ideals. But sometimes a simple slice of bread an a cold beer is enough.

And to that I say cheers!

All of the musings and writings are my own, albeit inspired by the cold beer and freshly baked bread. The photographs are also my own, taken with my Nikon D300.

Incidentally, many Czech craft breweries bake bread as a side product. Some of them openly sell the extra loafs, most of them would only hand the bread away upon request. If you ever visit my homeland and one of our several hundreds of microbreweries, do ask for their bread! Definitely worth it! ;)

I really love that idea! I am not sure why we do not have this here in South Africa. Maybe I should start a bread revolution here! I will definitely remember it. Do you know if they use spent grain in the bread? I have been wanting to try and bake with some spent grain.

I don't really think so - they mainly bake bread to utilize yeast. Or at least that's what they claim :)

There’s really nothing like warm sourdough and a cold beer, such a simple combo but hits all the right feels. Loved how you described the beers too, especially the banana esters bit! Made me wanna grab a loaf and crack open a chilled one. Cheers to the little joys 🍞🍺
