A House with a Garden #244

This week’s content is focused on our love for plants and gardens.

I’ll be sharing how I personally contribute to that passion.

First of all, I prefer living in a house that has a garden because I love plants. My mother taught me the importance of having a small garden close to the house. She always said, "There will be times when you need some leaves to garnish your meal, and you may not want to go all the way to the market or it might be unavailable at the market."

As a woman, it’s very helpful to have a little garden outside your home where you can grow simple plants like pumpkin leaves, seeds, fruits, and other plants rich in vitamins.

In our garden, we plant oranges, waterleaf, scent leaves, and pumpkin. These are useful in emergencies, especially when cooking.

Why Gardening is Important Gardening saved my mother a lot of money. On days she had to cook soup, she would normally need to buy different leaves at the market. But thanks to her garden, she didn’t have to spend as much.

Also, there are times when certain leaves are out of season or water is scarce. This makes them rare and expensive in the market. Having her own garden helped her avoid those challenges. Because of her, I’ve learned to appreciate the value of having a small space to grow crops for personal use.

1. Income Generation I remember my mum used to sell pumpkin seeds from the fruits she harvested. Because her plants grew well, many people believed that buying seeds from her would give them good results too as long as they cared for the plant properly, like adding manure. This became an extra source of income for her. With dedication, gardening can turn into a small business and help any woman earn money on the side.

   

2. Support for the Family This point is a bit similar to the one above. I’ve noticed that during fruit seasons, when it's time to give my kids fruits, I sometimes skip it if I’m on a tight budget especially since we also take supplements. But there’s a clear difference between natural fruits and processed supplements.

   Trying to balance both needs has made me spend a lot. However, I’m grateful that my dad planted orange trees in our family compound. Whenever oranges are in season, all I need to do is request some. I even extract the juice sometimes and sell it for extra cash.

Why Every Woman Should Have a Garden I strongly believe every woman should have a garden. It’s truly a lifesaver. There are times, especially when you have children, that your budget might be tight.
