I found two beetles on the lawn that seemed to be learning to fly.

Encontré dos escarabajos en el césped que parecían estar aprendiendo a volar.

They measured about 18 millimeters, had an orange back with dark spots, and their ventral side, legs, eyes and antennae were completely black.

Medían unos 18 milímetros, tenían el dorso anaranjado con manchas oscuras, el lado ventral, patas, ojos y antenas completamente negros.

They seemed less fearsome than another beetle I found a few days ago, a tiger beetle. This one, while also beautiful and beneficial, is a skilled predator of other insects.

Parecían menos temibles que otro escarabajo que encontré días atras, un escarabajo tigre. Este, siendo tambien bonito y beneficioso, es un hábil depredador de otros insectos.

Gymnetis pantherina pollinates while feeding on flowers. Thanks to this, some plants develop fruit.

Gymnetis pantherina poliniza mientras se alimenta en las flores. Gracias a ello, algunas plantas desarrollan frutos.

I had described them in another post using the common name of flower beetles. This time I was able to see them in a more natural environment and identify exactly which species they belong to.

Yo los había descrito en otro post con el nombre común de escarabajos de las flores. Esta vez pude verlos en un ambiente más natural e identificar exactamente a qué especie pertenecen.

To photograph the first one, I made it climb onto a dry leaf, from there I transported it to a tree trunk and then it flew away.

Para fotografiar al primero de ellos hice que subiera a una hoja seca, de allí lo transporté al tronco de un árbol y después voló.

Another one appeared later, with the same colors but duller.
I picked it up too, this time with my hand, and it flew quickly toward the trees.

Otro ejemplar apareció después, con los mismos colores pero más opacos .
Tambien lo alcé, esta vez con mi mano, y voló rápidamente hacia los árboles.

I thought maybe they had just emerged from the ground in a youth stadium and were showing off their wings for the first time.

Pensé que tal vez acababan de salir de la tierra en un estadio juvenil y estaban estrenando sus alas.

I also considered the possibility that it was a pair trying to mate.

Tambien creí en la posibilidad de que se tratara de una pareja intentado aparearse.

The next day I heard a buzzing sound and discovered one fluttering near some loquats that were on the ground.

Al dia siguiente escuché un zumbido y descubrí a uno revoloteando cerca de unos nísperos que estaban en el suelo.

If this beetle is turned upside down on a smooth surface, it cannot right itself.

Si este escarabajo es volteado patas arriba en una superficie lisa no puede incorporarse solo.

The male has a dull gray ventral face, and the female has a shiny black one.

El macho tiene la cara ventral gris opaco y la hembra lo tiene negro brillante.

Gymnetis pantherina belongs to the subfamily Cetoniinae or flower beetles, it lives in Venezuela but has also been reported in Colombia.
It feeds on, in addition to pollen, nectar, fruits and flowers.

Gymnetis pantherina pertenece a la subfamilia Cetoniinae o escarabajos de las flores, habita Venezuela pero tambien se ha reportado en Colombia.
Se alimenta de, ademas de polen, de néctar, frutos y flores.
