My entry to the Phone Photography Contest - #108 [En-Es] Dracaena angolensis

This is the first time I have closely observed the inflorescence of this plant.

Es la primera vez que observo de cerca la inflorescencia de esta planta.

It was brought by my husband from a neighboring house a few years ago.

Fue traída por mi esposo de una casa vecina hace algunos años.

I didn't know it, but Mom said that my paternal grandmother had one just like it and that she called it "Bolivar's Sword".

Yo no la conocía pero mamá dijo que mi abuela paterna tenía una igual y que la llamaba "Espada de Bolivar".

I found it strange and interesting, though not beautiful. The reference to my grandmother motivated me to treat it with more affection.

Me parecía rara e interesante, aunque no bonita. La referencia a mi abuela me motivó a que me dedicara a ella con más cariño.

Its leaves grew and multiplied very upright and pointed. I once thought of trimming the tips to prevent anyone from getting hurt.

Sus hojas crecían y se multiplicaban muy erectas y agudas. Alguna vez se me ocurrió contarles las puntas para evitar que alguien se lastimara.

It flourished in its original location, but circumstances at the time prevented me from paying attention to it.

En el lugar donde originalmente estaba llegó a florecer pero en aquel momento las circunstancias impidieron que le prestara atención.

A few months ago I moved it and it bloomed again. A spike with buds emerged from the middle of it, and, again, I didn't think it was important.

Hace pocos meses la cambié de lugar y volvió a florecer. Una espiga con botones surgió de en medio de ella y, de nuevo, creí que no era importante.

When I noticed that some flowers were opening at the bottom, I approached and took a photograph.

Al comprobar que estaban abriendo algunas flores de la parte baja me acerqué y fotografié.

I was captivated by its nuanced white color and the soft glow of its petals.

Me cautivó su color blanco matizado y el suave brillo de sus pétalos.

Its popular name is "African Lance" and it is from Angola. Is scientifically known as Sansevieria cylindrica in honor of its discoverer, the Italian botanist Raimondo di Sangro, Prince of San Severo. (Coincidentally, my father's name was Raimundo).

Su nombre popular es "Lanza africana" y es de Angola. Se conoce cientificamente como Sansevieria cylindrica en honor a su descubridor, el botánico italiano Raimondo di Sangro, príncipe de San Severo. (Casualmente mi papá se llamaba Raimundo).

It's a succulent also known as "Dracaena Agolensis" or the "African Snake". It symbolizes strength and power.

Es una suculenta también conocida como "Dracaena Angolensis" o "Serpiente africana". Simboliza fuerza y fortaleza.

It is toxic and drought-resistant. Like other plants of its genus, it cleans the air of benzene and other harmful substances. Its fiber has been proven useful for making strong ropes.

Es tóxica y soporta sequías. Al igual que otras plantas de su género, limpia el aire de bencenos y otras sustancias nocivas. Se ha comprobado que su fibra sirve para hacer cuerdas resistentes.
