This paper bear is one of my most recent origami creations. It took me several hours to assemble, which is why it looks fragile and striking, but its shadow tells another story. I had to place it somewhere so I could take a couple of photos, and I put it under direct light, which turned out to be the best option, as the folded outline stretches across the surface as if it were coming to life, as if the paper remembered something very special beyond its own whiteness. The shadow is not so perfect when it comes to imitating the figure: it exaggerates its angles, sharpens its snout, and hardens its legs. Where the paper is light, the shadow is dense.

Este oso de papel es uno de mis trabajos más recientes de origami, la cual me tardo varias horas en poder armarlo y por eso parece frágil, llamativo, pero su sombra cuenta otra historia. Tenía que colocarlo en lugar para así poder tomarle un par de fotos y lo coloqué bajo la luz directa, resultando de la mejor manera, ya que el contorno doblado se alarga sobre la superficie como si cobrara vida, como si el papel recordara algo muy especial más que su propia blancura. La sombra no es tan perfecta al momento de imitar a la figura: puesto que exagera sus ángulos, afila el hocico, endurece las patas. Donde el papel es liviano, la sombra es densa.

That dark projection is not a simple reflection; to achieve it, it has to be in the right position, and at the same time, it is a silent version born of light. It seems to advance a little further than the real body, as if it wanted to escape the limits of the folds and shine in order to attract attention. While the figure of that polar bear remains still, the shadow suggests movement, intention, even a presence that was not there before the lamp was turned on.

In that photograph, you can see something very disturbing, which is how the paper exists only because the light touches it, but the shadow exists because there is darkness waiting. It is a reminder that even the simplest things can project something greater, something that cannot be folded or stored away, all with a simple light, and this is where each of us must have our own light to shine. The figure is paper, but the shadow is a simple mark that disappears when the light is turned off, yet while it lives, it commands respect.

Esa proyección oscura no es un simple reflejo, para lograrlo tiene que estar en la posición correcta y a la vez es una versión silenciosa que nace de la luz. Parece avanzar un poco más que el cuerpo real, como si quisiera escapar del límite de los pliegues y brillar para así llamar la atención. Mientras la figura de ese oso polar permanece quieta, la sombra sugiere movimiento, intención, incluso una presencia que no estaba allí antes de encender la lámpara.

En esa fotografía se puede observar algo muy inquietante y es como el papel existe solo porque la luz lo toca, pero la sombra existe porque hay oscuridad esperando. Es el recordatorio de que incluso lo más simple puede proyectar algo más grande, algo que no se puede doblar ni guardar y todo con una simple luz y es aquí donde cada uno tiene que tener luz propia para brillar. La figura es papel, pero la sombra es una simple marca que desaparece al apagar la luz, pero que mientras vive, impone respeto.
