Modernity meets folklore - The Tourism Fair experience in Carabobo [ENG/SPA]
Yesterday, I had the opportunity to visit the city of Puerto Cabello in Carabobo State, Venezuela. To my surprise, an international tourism fair was being held right in the city's historic district. Specifically, along the boardwalk (malecón), tents were set up to house the booths for each participant.

El día de ayer tuve la oportunidad de visitar la ciudad de Puerto Cabello en el estado Carabobo, Venezuela; donde para mí sorpresa se esta celebrando una feria internacional de turismo en los espacios del casco histórico de la ciudad, específicamente a lo largo del malecón se distribuyeron carpas donde se encuentran los stand de cada participante.
It was a great experience to witness so many people still betting on tourism as a key economic driver. Anyone who has heard anything about Venezuela knows our economic situation is complex; business ownership here is for the brave. Personally, over the course of two years, I wasn't able to sustain two small businesses I started.
Fue una gran experiencia poder presenciar, como tantas personas apuestan todavía por el turismo como actividad económica. Quien haya escuchado alguna vez algo de Venezuela sabrá que nuestra situación económica es compleja, tener un negocio o emprendimiento es para valientes, personalmente en el transcurso de 2 años dos pequeños negocios que tuve no pude sostenerlos.
For this reason, I was filled with admiration seeing businesses from different states: hotels, inns, restaurants, culinary offerings, domestic cacao and chocolate, agriculture, livestock, technology—everything you can imagine related to the tourism industry. Of course, I couldn't help but wonder how they sustain themselves financially, because I get the impression that Venezuelans don't travel as much as they used to. If that's the case, these entrepreneurs are finding ways to reinvent themselves day after day, and they were all here showing off their work with real dedication.
Por esta razón fue motivo de admiración para mí ver negocios de distintos estados como: hoteles, posadas, restaurantes, propuestas gastronómicas, chocolates con cacao nacional, agricultura, ganadería, tecnología, de todo lo que puedas imaginar que se relacione con el turismo. Claro que no dejaba de preguntarme cómo hacían sostenerse económicamente, porque tengo la impresión de que él venezolanos ya no viaja como antes, si este es el caso, estos emprendedores consiguen la manera de reinventarse día tras día y aquí estaban todos con esmero mostrando lo que saben hacer.
It was also interesting to see visitors from abroad betting on investment despite everything we go through as a country. Although it was sad to see only a few nations represented, I hope for the day when this changes and we see many more with the ability to invest here. They know the potential we have; our natural assets attract many, but the warmth of our people is our greatest treasure, and it always surprises our visitors.
Fue interesante también ver como visitantes desde el extranjero, apostaban por la inversión a pesar de todo lo que vivimos como pais, aunque fue triste ver solo pocos países presentes, espero el día en que esto cambie y veamos a muchos tener la disponibilidad de poder invertir, sabiendo el potencial que tenemos, nuestras bellezas naturales atraen a muchos, pero el calor de nuestra gente es nuestro mayor tesoro, que sorprende a quienes nos visitan.
In addition to the business exhibits, there were many of a cultural nature. I applaud this. We can certainly modernize tourism, just as other nations do by offering top-tier entertainment, but I believe that our folklore—what our ancestors carried with them for generations—must be maintained alongside the new.
Además de las exposiciones de emprendimientos, también habían muchas de carácter cultural, esto lo aplaudo, bien podemos modernizar el turismo, así como hacen otras naciones ofreciendo lo mejor para el entretenimiento, pero creo que las manifestaciones folklóricas, lo que nuestros ancestros por generaciones llevaron consigo, debemos mantener en acompañamiento con lo nuevo.

Ultimately, visiting this fair reminded me that despite the difficulties, the spirit of many Venezuelans remains intact. I take away much more from this experience than just a nice time; I take away admiration at seeing such resilience. Seeing the boardwalk vibrating with so many proposals and displays of our roots confirmed to me that tourism is a vital pathway for our recovery. I can only stand and applaud every exhibitor, because in every booth, I didn't just see a business; I saw an act of faith, which I hope will soon yield great fruits in freedom.
En definitiva, visitar esta feria me recordó que más allá de las dificultades, la voluntad de muchos venezolanos sigue intacta. Me llevo de esta experiencia mucho más que haber pasado un bonito momento, me llevo admiración al ver tanta resistencia; ver el malecón vibrando con tantas propuestas y muestras de nuestras raíces folklóricas, me confirmó que el turismo es una ventana vital para nuestra recuperación. No me queda mas que aplaudir de pie a cada expositor, pues en cada stand no solo vi un negocio, vi un acto de fe, que ojalá pronto rinda grandes frutos en libertad.
