Sounds like there are many more positives than negatives and quality of life is important. I complain a lot about Johannesburg because it is mainly broken or falling apart but life is generally good. I would not recommend it for someone who has not grown up in a country that is up there as the worst crime places in the world as you have to read the lay of the land when in dodgy parts of town.

I hear stories from the South Africans that I meet about how it isn't that dangerous as long as you know how to watch your ass. I guess in your situation you have no choice but to deal with it so it is good that you find it manageable.
