Show Me A Photo Contest Round 225 starring the "lousy jacks" Apostlebird

Hello to all my friends of our #featheredfriends for this weeks #SMaP contest with the theme "funny" with thanks to @nelinoeva, @melinda010100 and everyone else who is a fetheredfriend fancier!

I'd like to introduce you to the Apostlebird- I’d never seen one up close before, and now I’ve seen a whole posse of them as they munched on some leftover bread by another traveler during a brief stop to capture some photos of one of the many faces of Australia as I was driving to far north QLD yesterday.

They’ve got these soft, smoky-grey feathers with brownish wings and long black tails. Not flashy, but beautiful in that earthy, understated way. They rummage around on the ground for insects, seeds and scraps, making a lot of chatter as they go — kind of like bushland gossipers. 😄

Apparently they're never alone — they do everything as a group, from feeding to parenting, and even just hanging out like a feathered street gang.

While they’re more common in inland eastern Australia, isolated populations do occur in northern Queensland, including dry open areas near towns or scrublands.

Apparently they’re not named after religious figures for nothing — the early settlers noticed they often hang out in groups of 12, like the twelve apostles. That’s where the name came from. In some places they’re nicknamed "lousy jacks", which sounds a bit rude, but it actually just refers to their scruffy, dishevelled appearance and love of communal living.

If you're in FNQ and spot a bunch of greyish birds foraging together on the ground, take a closer look — you might have just stumbled on a family of Apostlebirds doing their thing.
