Pinky and Spiky Comics Contest: Web3 Promise - Entries Assessment

Hello, Draw a Day Community and friends.

I have been asked by our contest host @khiabels to provide my inputs on the entries. Here is my individual analysis of the entries we received for the Pinky and Spiky Comics Making Contest under the theme Web3 Promises highlighting their strengths and offering some technical advice for improvement.

Entry 1: @allyson19

Shows Pinky forgetting her keys and being told to call customer service only to learn there is none. The punchline, “Good luck to that. Welcome to Web3,” delivered by Cornelius, is a clever take on Web3’s lack of centralized support.

Positives: The humor is spot on, capturing the frustration of Web3 in a relatable way. Pinky’s frustration and Cornelius’ smugness, enhance the storytelling. The dialogue flows naturally

Technical Advice: The background in the first panel feels a bit cluttered with the text overlay (“Invalid Key”), which slightly distracts from Pinky’s expression. Simplifying the background or using a lighter color for the text could make the characters stand out more. Additionally, experimenting with panel transitions like a close-up of Pinky’s face in the second panel could heighten the comedic timing.

Entry 2: @hubyr

Shows Pinky and Spiky to a Web3 Token Shop where they trade acorns for tokens, only to be confused by the concept of tokenization. Dietrich’s Pine cone token next adds a funny twist.

Positives: The vibrant colors and background of the token shop create an engaging scene. The concept of acorns as currency is a fun metaphor for Web3 tokens. Spiky’s excitement over a tokenized acorn is endearing. The multi-panel format helps build up to the punchline.

Technical Advice: The text in the first panel “Hurry get your acorn tokens now!” is a bit cramped, adjusting the placement could improve readability. The characters’ expressions are great, but adding more dynamic poses like Pinky pointing at the acorn in confusion could make the comic feel more lively.

Entry 3: @doodletrends

The comic explores DAO voting system, with Pinky worrying about voting for the wrong proposal and Spiky casually mentioning a 6-week wait. The punchline reveals their acorns are “gone again,” highlighting Web3’s risks.

Positives: The dialogue captures Pinky and Spiky’s personalities quite well Pinky’s anxiety and Spiky’s chill attitude shine through. The humor is subtle but effective, especially with the “nothing, for 6 weeks” line. The panel layout is clean and easy to follow.

Technical Advice: The artwork is solid, but the characters’ poses are a bit static. Adding more movement like Pinky gesturing nervously at the screen could enhance storytelling. The background could use more detail to set the scene like showing a forest setting to tie into the acorn theme.

Entry 4: @shookt

Shookt’s entry continues the DAO theme, with Pinky obsessing over her lost acorns and Naara suggesting a shared ledger where “no one animal is in charge.” Spiky’s optimistic “Web3 for the win” wraps it up nicely.

Positives: The inclusion of multiple gang members (Pinky, Spiky, and a new character Naara) adds variety and depth. The dialogue flows naturally, and Spiky’s naive optimism is charming. The panel transitions are smooth, guiding the reader through the story.

Technical Advice: The text bubbles in the second panel overlap slightly, making them a bit hard to read, spacing them out could help. The artwork is clean, but adding more shading or texture to the characters could give them more depth and make the comic pop visually.

Entry 5: @loverdoll

Comic takes place in a café where Spiky tries to tip Betsy with a Web3 transaction, only to be shocked by the high gas fees. Betsy’s nonchalant “Whatevs!” and Pinky’s laughter is a funny ending.

Positives: The humor is great, with the gas fee twist being a relatable Web3 critique. The café setting is well drawn, with small details like the cups and tablet adding to the scene. Betsy’s reaction steals the show, and the dialogue captures the gang’s dynamic perfectly.

Technical Advice: The text in the second panel (“Oh no, the fee costs more than the tip”) is a bit small and could be hard to read for some, using a slightly larger font or bolding the text could improve readability. The characters’ expressions are great, but adding more dynamic angles like a close-up of Spiky’s shocked face could heighten the comedic impact.

Entry 6: @tinster

Shows Pinky discovering Spiky spent his savings on an NFT duck, calling it his “retirement omelette.” Pinky’s disbelief and Spiky’s smugness create a funny contrast.

Positives: The punchline is hilarious and perfectly captures the NFT craze in Web3. The characters’ expressions like Pinky’s shock and Spiky’s confidence are spot-on and add to the humor. The singlepanel format works well for delivering the joke quickly.

Technical Advice: The background is minimal, which keeps the focus on the characters, but adding a subtle setting like a living room details could ground the scene better. The text placement is good, but experimenting with different fonts or styles for emphasis say bolding “NFT duck” could make the punchline stand out even more.

It was fun and exciting glossing over these entries and providing some inputs which I hope would be of help to everyone. Thank you for this opportunity it was a pleasure being a part of it. These are just my own personal opinion letme know about your thoughts in the comments.

Cheers,
Krisette
