Focus Is An Intentional Act
How do you Stay Focused in a World Full of Distractions
I found this topic really interesting because alot has been through me when it comes to staying focused,i learned to fight distractions the hard way, by losing whole mornings to my phone and then feeling annoyed at myself fro wasting my time. Over time I began to try small, practical changes that built into my routine. Believe me am very glad, extremely glad that I'll be sharing this wisdom I've learnt over time with you.

The biggest distraction for me, honestly, is social media, that's my Instagram, Twitter, and WhatsApp statuses swallow my time before I realize it. Most times i open them intending to check one update, and suddenly thirty minutes are gone. Other things also disturb me like random YouTube reels, news sites, unexpected chores, or hunger but social media is number one that’s why I take it seriously and put strong barriers between myself and those apps.
First, I do a distraction check every few weeks, I've chosen to that after every two weeks. I sit with a notebook and write down the five main things that pull me away from work and every single time social media always tops the list, followed by YouTube, financial news, household interruptions, and hunger. Writing them down makes them real, once I see them on paper, I begin to sort them out , for example i deal with hunger by eating before deep work. That simple act of naming and planning turns guilt into clarity.
The home screen diet and grayscale mode are two things that changed how I use my phone. I used to keep social media apps on the front screen where I could tap them without thinking but i adjusted that, Now my home screen has only my calendar, notes, work tools, screen time and timer. Social apps are placed on the last page. It sounds small, but it breaks the habit of mindlessly opening them.

Grayscale mode makes an even bigger difference. Once I set my phone to black and white during work hours, the colourful attraction of Instagram or YouTube thumbnails disappears. Without bright colours, the apps look dull and uninviting. I remember one day, I opened Instagram out of habit, saw everything in grey, and immediately closed it, it has this way of decreasing dopamine levels, That' boredom saved me a wasted half hour.
I also rely on focus sessions where i assign a particular time frame to protect real work. I plan at least two deep sessions in my day. Before each session I write one sentence about my goal, like “Test login form.”, this short intention keeps me steady. During the session, my phone is away, notifications are off, and I focus on one thing.
Public commitment is another trick that works for me. Whenever i want to get focused and get something done,i make sure i tell a friend or a colleague. When I tell a friend or colleague, “I’ll finish this by 4 pm,” I feel accountable. Once, I was tempted to scroll through my X account at 3:30 pm, but I remembered my promise. That sense of responsibility pushed me to finish instead of wasting time.
I also learned to fight vague tasks. Instead of saying “Work on project,” wheref it makes me indefinite I'd rather say “Fix form validation.” That simple clarity removes confusion and stops me from drifting to social media when I feel stuck,it avoids the question, "where do i start from".
For random thoughts, I keep a simple capture system by making use of the note on my phone. When an idea pops up like “reply to a message” or “buy foodstuff,” I jot it there and return to work. This way, I don’t use social media or messages as an excuse to escape from my task. Later, I handle everything in one go.
Finally, basics matter more than fancy hacks. I protect sleep, food, and movement. When I’m well rested, I focus longer so i I eat a light meal before work so I’m not sleepy and also take short walks between work hours for at least five to ten minutes outside resets me. These simple habits keep my energy steady, and energy is the real currency of attention.
So ladies and gents, this is how i stay focused, these routines are small and practical. Just by doing a distraction check, cleaning my home screen, using grayscale, setting focus sessions, making commitments, clarifying tasks, capturing stray thoughts, and protecting rest, I stay on track. Social media still tempts me every day, but with these systems in place, I decide when to use it instead of letting it control me.
