Recently, on Valentine’s Day, I mentioned in a post that I met my husband at the company where we both worked, he in industrial safety and I in quality control as a chemical analyst. The story is that the first time he saw me was one night when I was working overtime analyzing a raw material, and before going home, I went to the security booth to deliver the results report. Over time, he told a cousin of his that he loved my eyes.

Weeks after that first encounter, I started receiving text messages (no WhatsApp, it was 2006) from someone who wanted to meet me and told me he worked at the company but didn’t want to tell me who he was. To be honest, I’ve always thought those things were silly, because if you’ve already gone to the trouble of finding out my phone number (I still don’t know who gave it to you), have the courage to tell me who you are. Well, at that moment, I also thought that someone was playing a joke on me, because talking to someone you don’t know lends itself to endless misunderstandings. The thing is, the first time he wrote to me, I replied and asked him who he was, but he didn’t want to tell me. The next day he wrote to me again and I asked him again, and since he still wouldn’t tell me who he was, I gave him an ultimatum: if he didn’t tell me, I wouldn’t reply to his messages anymore. And that’s how he told me who he was.

After that day, he wrote to me every night when we were both resting. He went on vacation and I didn’t see him at work (since he wasn’t there), but we always talked, until two months later when we had that outing where we could talk in person. At that time, I never imagined we would get this far, but it’s been 18 years now. The fact that he asked me to be his girlfriend a few days after our outing (it had been a long time since anyone had done that) gave me signs that he was serious.

Hace poco para el día de los enamorados comenté en una publicación que conocí a mi marido en la empresa donde trabajábamos, él, en el área de seguridad industrial y yo en control de calidad como analista químico. La historia es que la primera vez que me vio fue una noche en la que yo estaba haciendo horas extras analizando una materia prima y antes de irme a casa fui a la casilla de seguridad a entregar el reporte de los resultados. Con el tiempo, él le comentó a una prima suya que le habían encantado mis ojos.

Semanas después de ese primer encuentro, empecé a recibir mensajes de textos (nada de WhatsApp, era el año 2006), de una persona que me quería conocer y me decía que trabajaba en la empresa pero no me quería decir quien era, la verdad esas cosas siempre me han parecido tontas, porque si ya te diste el trabajo de averiguar mi número de teléfono (todavía no se quién se lo dió) ten el valor de decirme quien es de una vez. Bueno, en aquel momento yo también pensaba que alguien me quería jugar una broma, pues esas cosas de hablar con una persona que no sabes quién es, se presta para infinidad de malentendidos. El caso es que la primera vez que me escribió le respondí y de una vez pregunté quien era y no me quiso decir, al día siguiente me volvió a escribir y volví a preguntar y como no me dijo quien era, le puse el ultimato, de que si no me decía entonces no le iba a contestar más los mensajes y así fue como me dijo que era él.

Después de ese día, me escribía todos los días en la noche, cuando ya estábamos cada uno descansando. Él salió de vacaciones y en la empresa no lo veía (pues no estaba) pero siempre hablábamos, hasta que dos meses después se dio esa salida en la que pudimos hablar personalmente. En aquel momento ni imaginaba que íbamos a llegar hasta aquí pero ya van 18 años, aunque el hecho de que días después de nuestra salida me pidiera ser su novia (tenía tiempo que nadie hacía eso) me dio señas de que iba en serio.
