Beliefs and omens about the future - LOH #246 [ENG-ESP]

I would love to talk about my experience with omens or the beliefs I have regarding the subject. That is the statement I chose to participate in this week’s contest #246. Although at this time I don’t get too carried away with these topics one way or another we have all grown up with certain beliefs that have been instilled in us in the family or we learn from our culture. Since the statement mentions the black cat and shooting stars then I am not going to expand on them, although I have also heard a lot about the bad luck of the black cat and making a wish with the shooting star.

It makes me laugh what I am going to say but it is something that my mom used to say at home and thinking about it even I sometimes say it to my children and it is about sweeping your feet. My mom used to say that when the person who was sweeping the house happened to pass the broom over the feet of another person then the person whose feet were swept would not get married 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I think they swept my feet a lot, because I haven’t married yet and I still don’t know what sweeping my feet has to do with getting married but it was an omen.

One of the beliefs that are most related to omens is bad luck and like the black cat, there are also other things we do not want to do to avoid bad luck and one of them is to go under a ladder either movable or fixed, it is better to turn it around. Another thing is that we do not want to spill salt, when by chance salt falls to the ground you should pick up a little with the index finger and thumb (a pinch of salt) and throw behind the shoulder, to ward off bad luck. That’s what they say.

I don’t know if my next example has anything to do with the topic but I want to mention it, and that is dream interpretation. I remember when I was a teenager it was said in the village that when one dreamed of snakes it meant that there was going to be gossip where we were involved, which translated that we should beware of gossipy people because we were already warned by the dream. I know that there were interpretations of other dreams but at this moment I do not remember more, only the dream of the snakes came to my memory.

My next omen is not mine but one that I learned after I grew up from my husband and that is not to leave the house after he is already in bed. I explain, many years ago we were lying down and about to go to sleep and suddenly my husband was called by a cousin who was out partying and had come to pick him up so they could go out partying, my husband did not even go out to the gate, nothing, he told him that he was already in bed and was not going to go out. Later he told me that he had been taught that in his family because it is bad luck, if you are already calm in your home why are you going out, looking for what has not been lost. It really makes a lot of sense to me.

These are some of the beliefs about omens that I grew up with and others that I learned later. Maybe some of them don’t have much logic but they are beliefs that have lasted for many years in the culture and for a reason. Me encantaría hablar de mi experiencia con los presagios o las creencias que tengo con respecto al tema. Ese es el enunciado que escogí para participar en el concurso de la semana #246. Aunque en este momento no me dejo llevar mucho por estos temas de una y otra manera todos hemos crecido con ciertas creencias que nos han inculcado en la familia o aprendemos de nuestra cultura. Como en el enunciado se menciona el gato negro y las estrellas fugaces entonces yo no me voy a extender con ellos, aunque también he escuchado mucho sobre la mala suerte del gato negro y pedir un deseo con la estrella fugaz.

Me da risa lo que voy a decir pero es algo que en mi casa mi mamá decía y pensándolo bien hasta yo a veces se los digo a mis hijos y se trata de barrerse los pies. Mi mamá decía que cuando la persona que estaba barriendo la casa por casualidad pasaba la escoba por los pies de otra entonces la persona a la que le barrían los pies no se casaba 🤣🤣🤣 yo creo que a mí me barrieron mucho los pies, pues no me he casado aun y todavía no se que tiene que ver barrerse los pies con casarse pero era un presagio.

Una de las creencias que más se relacionan con los presagios es la mala suerte y al igual que el gato negro, también existen otras cosas que no queremos hacer para no tener mala suerte y una de ellas es pasar por debajo de una escalera ya sea de las movibles o fijas, es mejor darle la vuelta. Otra cosa es que tampoco queremos derramar sal, cuando por casualidad se cae sal al suelo se debe recoger un poco con el dedo índice y pulgar (una pizca de sal) y lanzar por detrás del hombro, para alejar la mala suerte. Eso dicen.

No sé si mi próximo ejemplo tiene algo que ver con el tema pero quiero mencionarlo, y es la interpretación de sueños. Recuerdo que cuando estaba adolescente se decía en el pueblo que cuando uno soñaba con culebras quería decir que se iba a armar un chisme donde estábamos involucrados, lo que se traducía que debíamos cuidarnos de las personas chismosas porque ya estábamos avisados por el sueño. Se que habían interpretaciones de otros sueños pero en este momento no recuerdo más, solo vino a mi memoria el sueño de las culebras.

Mi siguiente presagio no es mío sino uno que aprendí después de grande por mi marido y es no salir de la casa después que ya se está acostado. Explico, hace mucho años estábamos acostados ya a punto de dormir y de repente a mi marido lo llama un primo que andaba de rumba y había venido a buscarlo para que salieran de rumba, pues mi marido ni siquiera salió al portón, nada, le dijo que el ya estaba acostado y no iba a salir. Después me dijo que eso se lo habían enseñado en su familia pues es de mala suerte, si ya estás tranquilo en tu hogar porqué vas a salir, buscando lo que no se le ha perdido. De verdad me parece que me parece que tiene mucho sentido.

Estas son algunas de las creencias de presagios con las que crecí y otra que aprendí después. Tal vez algunas no tengan mucha lógica pero son creencias que han perdurado por muchos años en la cultura y por algo será.
