The White Sailing Boat - Traditinal Cake of Nusantara
I just realized that there are so many traditional Nusantara cakes that can be said to be made from plants, without any animal contamination at all. So are gluten free, even though basically the archipelago does not have agricultural products such as wheat and the like.
But, times have changed, even if I see many traditional cakes in the market, I am often disappointed. To keep the price cheaper, they replace the basic ingredients with wheat flour. Not to mention, if the basic ingredients are replaced, the taste will also be very different.
That's what makes me really like cooking at home. Besides being able to learn new things, I find the taste of food that suits my taste. Even more than that, I can learn a lot of interesting things about the archipelago.
Like this one food, which I just made and is homemade by myself. I am very proud to have been able to make delicious food with good measurements too. I will tell you how to make it!
It is called the White Sailing Boat. Because it is similar to a boat made from banana leaves.
Ingredients of Sailing White Boat:
- Banana leaves and staples or toothpicks
- 120 gr rice flour
- ¼ tsp salt
- 450 ml coconut milk
- 150 gr palm sugar
- Water for boiling and steaming
The Steps to Make Sailing White Boat:
- Before you make the dough, it would be better to make a 'takir' as a boat or cup from leaves. We call it takir because it is made from banana leaves that are easily shaped. First thing first, clean the leaves by wiping them with a slightly damp cloth, then heat them over a fire so that the leaves become softer and not stiff.
- Form into a small boat using staples on 2 sides.
- Take and measure the rice flour, then add a little salt and also pour in the coconut milk that has been squeezed and prepared.
- After that, stir and mix into one dough without any lumps of flour. It can be filtered or you stir it by hand.
- The next step, you pour the thinly sliced palm sugar and put it into the takir. If you like it sweet, then add the palm sugar, I only put about ¼ of the white dough because my palm sugar has a very sweet taste.
- The last step, put it in the steamer and pour the rice flour mixture into the takir. Steam for about 15 minutes to 20 minutes. If the top has started to harden, the cake can be lifted and enjoyed!
You can see the palm sugar filling is very amazing! The palm sugar will melt and blend with the fat of the coconut milk and a little savory from the salt that is mixed in. Its good for a mood booster.
See you the next time hive friends!
