The best part of Lily’s birthday party was not the cake or the balloons, but the finger buffet. The food was on a large, colorful table and the sandwiches, spring rolls and cupcakes were eaten up quicker than anyone could have predicted. The kids excitedly gathered snacks with their fingers, laughed and hurriedly went back and forth between the buffet and the garden. Grown-ups stood around chatting while they ate food and drinks they had brought. Grandma thought the sausage rolls were just right and Uncle Joe stayed near the shrimp skewers. Even Max, who was shy, liked the snacks he was used to. When the sun set behind the trees, the finger buffet reminded everyone: happiness can be found in the simplest and smallest things.
