CineTV Contest: Taegukgi, a moving drama

Some movies touch on topics or show realities that deeply affect us, making us reflect, cry, and sometimes even realize that we often complain about trivial things. They can also lead us to examine the quality of some of our relationships.

Two years ago, I reviewed the movie I'm going to mention today. I don't even want to reread that review because I might repeat something I already wrote, and that's not my intention. The movie in question is called Taegukgi Hwinallimyeo, which was titled Brotherhood of War in the Americas.

This Korean film tells the story of two brothers who, at the time when the country was divided in two due to political ideologies, end up being recruited and serving on the front lines. The older brother, having become the head of the family, sacrifices himself by working as a boot cleaner and aspiring to be a great shoemaker, so that his mother, fiancée (who is also in charge of their younger siblings) but above all for his younger brother, who is suffering from an illness and wants to go to university.

However, the older brother's desire to save his younger brother is so strong that what begins as an action to get his brother off the battlefield turns into something else, as the horrors of war exacerbate the situation, and the older brother is not exactly very communicative, so his behavior causes a dispute between them.

This film is overwhelming for me because it shows, in a very raw way, situations that can be experienced on any war front or battlefield, such as the hunger that troops may be exposed to if they are isolated and supplies do not reach them, which also includes medical care. A raw scene in which a man is wounded in the abdomen and operated on in precarious conditions shows how he suffers from a severe infection, screams in pain, and even has worms. It is very raw and could undoubtedly happen on any front.

The whole situation depicted in the film reminded me of how difficult any situation can be on a declared war front or in any other conflict, how soldiers can become demoralized and even psychologically affected by extreme situations.

On the other hand, something that affected me greatly was seeing how the mother of these brothers and her future daughter-in-law had to do whatever was necessary to survive, as they were two women alone with small children. The young woman's decision to attend a meeting in search of food led to her arrest, which did not end well for her, her brother-in-law, or her boyfriend.

That specific part of the film reminds me a lot of the situation in my country, where political tendencies have become so radicalized that some talk about killing those who think differently. In fact, it has happened. There was a very notorious case a few years ago in which, in the midst of protests, a young man was accused of having a certain political inclination, and those present doused him with gasoline and set him on fire. Days later, the young man died in a hospital.

Another aspect of this film is how the difficult situation pits the brothers against each other. One changes to the point of seeming to have lost his mind, believing that he has lost everything that was important to him.

Taegukgi Hwinallimyeo begins by showing us how one of the characters is now an old man and receives a call to confirm his identity after remains are found in an excavation. In the end, we see how the whole story focuses on the need for closure and a farewell from a brother who waited for the other to reunite and fulfill a promise. I think those moments are what bring the most tears and feelings to all of us who have seen this movie.

Now, as for whether I like to watch movies of this type, no, but when I come across one, I take the opportunity to analyze myself and my surroundings, because I believe that their purpose, beyond being watched, is for us to analyze what we have around us and within us.

In short, Taegukgi Hwinallimyeo is a movie that moved me and still does from beginning to end, thus culminating my participation in Cine TV Contest #142 - Movie That is Too Much

Algunas películas tocan temas o muestran realidades que nos tocan profundamente, haciéndonos reflexionar, llorar y a veces hasta notar que muchas veces nos quejamos por tonterías, también pueden llevarnos a examinar la calidad de algunas de nuestras relaciones.

Hace dos años hice un review de la película que mencionaré hoy, no quiero ni releer dicha publicación porque podría repetir algo de lo ya escrito, y no es la intención, la película en cuestión se titula Taegukgi Hwinallimyeo a la cual en el continente americano se le tituló La Hermandad de la guerra

Esta película coreana nos narra la historia de dos hermanos que en el momento en el que este país se dividió en dos por temas de ideologías políticas, así que terminan reclutados y sirviendo en el frente, el hermano mayor al haberse convertido en la cabeza de la familia, se sacrifica trabajando como limpia botas y aspirando ser un gran zapatero, para que no le falte nada a su madre, prometida (quien a su vez está a cargo de sus hermanitos) pero sobre todo por su hermano menor, ya que esta sufre una enfermedad y desea que ingrese a la universidad.

Ahora bien, es tanto el deseo de este hermano mayor por salvar a su hermanito que lo que comienza como una acción en pro de este hermano para que salga del frente de batalla, se va convirtiendo en algo más, ya que los horrores de la guerra agudizan la situación, además de que el hermano mayor no es precisamente muy comunicativo por lo que su conducta genera una disputa entre ellos.

Esta película para mí es abrumadora porque muestra primero de manera muy cruda situaciones que se pueden vivir en cualquier frente de guerra o campo de batalla, como el hambre a la que pueden verse expuestas las tropas si son aisladas y no les llegan los suministros, lo que incluye también la parte médica y ver una escena cruda en la que un hombre fue herido en el abdomen y fue operado en condiciones precarias, muestran como sufre de una severa infección, grita de dolor y hasta tiene gusanos, es algo muy crudo y que sin duda puede ocurrir en cualquier frente.

Toda esta situación planteada en la película me recordó lo difícil que puede ser cualquier situación en un frente de guerra declarado o en cualquier otro conflicto, como los soldados pueden desmoralizarse y hasta verse afectados psicológicamente por situaciones extremas.

Por otra parte, algo que me afectó mucho fue ver como la madre de estos hermanos y su futura nuera, tuvieron que hacer lo necesario para vivir, pues eran dos mujeres solas con niños pequeños, por lo que la vida de esta joven al asistir a una reunión en búsqueda de alimento, le ocasionó un arresto que no terminó nada bien para ella, su cuñado y novio.

Esa parte en específico de la película me hace recordar mucho la situación en mi país, donde las tendencias políticas se han radicalizado tanto que algunos hablan de matar a quien opine diferente, de hecho, ha pasado, hubo un caso muy sonado hace unos años en los que en medio de unas protestas acusaron a un joven de ser de cierta inclinación política y los allí presentes le rociaron gasolina y le prendieron fuego, días después el joven murió en un hospital.

Otro aspecto de esta película es como lo difícil de la situación llega a enfrentar a los hermanos. Uno cambia al punto de parecer haber perdido la razón, al creer que ha perdido todo lo que para él era importante.

Taegukgi Hwinallimyeo comienza mostrándonos como uno de los personajes ya es un anciano y recibiendo una llamada para confirmar su identidad, tras encontrar restos en una excavación y al final vemos como toda la historia se centra en la necesidad de un cierre de una despedida por parte de un hermano que se quedó esperando al otro para reunirse y ver cumplida una promesa, esos momentos creo son los que más lágrimas y sentimientos hacen aflorar a todos los que hemos visto esta película.

Ahora en cuanto a si me gusta ver películas de este tipo, no, pero cuando me topo con una aprovecho para analizarme a mí misma y al entorno, pues creo que su propósito, más allá de ser vistas, es que analicemos lo que tenemos a nuestro alrededor y dentro de nosotros.

En resumen, Taegukgi Hwinallimyeo es una película que me conmovió y todavía lo hace de principio a fin, así culminar mi participación en Cine TV Contest #142 - Movie That is Too Much
